First step to rent a house in Tunisia: choosing an estate agent or contract directly with the landlord.

Second step: execute the contract by signing it in three original copies.

Third step: the landlord legalizes the three contracts at the town hall for TND 3.

Fourth step: the tenant legalizes the three contracts at the town hall for TND 0,750.

It is usual to sign a renting contract for a year, for inhabiting the property only (not for commercial purposes), with a one-month notice period. It will not be required that the tenant proves that he earns three times the amount of the rent.

This is such freedom compared to what happened to me in Paris, France. As single mother of two children, no landlord agreed to rent me a flat, even though I had pay slips to prove I earned three times the rent amount and I was under a contract of undetermined duration. I had to pretend I was single, then for the next flat one of my friend had to pretend he was my boyfriend and living with me. He was the one who had pay slips at the time. I was going back to college and only living on savings.

I love having freedom now. I savor every bit of it. I love choosing how I want to manage my life and my finances.
